What weโre all about
Our philosophy is simple: teach the kids, heal the world.
Education savesโyou can make a lot out of a little if you have the good fortune to study. And a good education healsโour future senators, teachers, and neighbors are here, now, trying to make sense of the world theyโre living in (along with their Algebra homework). A robust education is fundamental to a thriving society, but our education system has lost touch with the very people itโs meant to serve. Thatโs why when we founded Karma Tutors, we made three promises to ourselves:
1. Our tutors are lifelong learners
Our tutors are experts in their fields, and they are animated about their passion projects. They boast Masters degrees, PhDs, and decades of experience. But more impressive is what they canโt put on their resumes: from working in equine therapy to spearheading potable water projects in Guatemala to memorizing over 20,000 digits of pi, our tutors are dynamic, passionate contributors to the world who inspire their students. We lead by example to foster their curiosity and encourage them to lean into it.
2. Our job is to support families
While we indeed value academic rigor, we are not interested in being drill sergeants. We recognize that our work doesnโt happen in a vacuumโwhether itโs a stressful dance recital coming up, or a global pandemic going down, our kids donโt just leave what theyโre carrying at the door.
Thatโs why we emphasize close communication with parents, and itโs why we seek tutors who can integrate essential values into their work with their students. When youโve been offering brilliant parental advice for months but it always falls on deaf ears, it helps to have a trusted mentor who can give your student a nudge.
3. Our duty is to all students
The Karma Tutors Impact Fund is a 501(c)(3) founded in conjunction with Karma in 2020. KTIF provides the same high-quality, individualized academic support to students from vulnerable populations in our rural Colorado community. KTIF is governed by an independent board of local educators and community stakeholders who share our mission to create equal access to educational support.
Karma is also in proud partnership with Partners in Mission in Guatemala, which has worked for over 20 years to lift up the rural Mayan population of Guatemala through education. PIMIG has also championed numerous humanitarian projects such as installing safe stoves in every home, building community latrines, funding schools and scholarship programs, and now, securing reliable and sustainable access to clean water.
By nurturing a culture that celebrates education and by channeling resources into projects that support it, we provide equitable opportunities for students of all backgrounds to excel in their studies, build their futures, and become future community stewards. When you choose the best for your child by choosing us, you contribute directly to a more just future.
Meet the Tutors!
Rico, CO
Paul
After graduating from the University of Maryland with a BA in Mathematics, Paul worked at a tutoring center on the east coast, helping kids of all ages make sense of his favorite field. He went on to receive his master's and PhD in from the University of Delaware and taught there at the college level.
In 2016, Paul packed up his things and followed a lifelong dream of moving out west. That journey brought him to Colorado, where he taught high-school math, tutored students across STEM subjects, and set the US record for reciting digits of pi from memory. Because MATH!
When heโs not helping students, Paul can be found hiking, biking, snowboarding, memorizing thousands of digits of pi, brushing up on his Japanese, and playing board games.
Mary
Rico, CO
Mary earned her BA in English Literature and a minor in Spanish from the University of Delaware, where she worked in the University Writing Center. It was there that Mary discovered her calling to increase language diversity, as the majority of her students were nonnative English speakers. In 2016, she moved out to Colorado, where she continued tutoring, taught middle- and high-school English and History, and earned her masterโs in Hispanic-American Literature from the University of Barcelona.
Now, Mary integrates her Spanish skills, teaching background, and commitment to equity in education via the Karma Tutors Impact Fund. She is also an active member of the Executive Committee of Partners in Mission in Guatemala; currently, she is leading a potable water project in the rural highlands of Guatemala.
